  • Torino Scale: Bennu is currently classified as Level 1 on the Torino Scale, which ranges from 0 to 10. Level 1 means "no unusual danger, but worthy of monitoring." This makes it one of the highest-risk known asteroids, but still, a very low risk.
  • Importance of Monitoring: The study of Bennu is crucial not only for its composition but also for developing "planetary defense" strategies. If an asteroid truly threatened Earth, it would be essential to know how to deflect it. Techniques being studied include using a spacecraft as a "gravity tractor" to alter its orbit, or even kinetic impacts.
